Australia Pilots Free Program To Reduce Peanut Allergies In Kids

New Treatment for Peanut Allergies in Babies

ADAPT OIT Program Launched in 10 Hospitals

Free Treatment for Children Under 12 Months

A potentially life-changing treatment for babies with peanut allergies is now available at 10 hospitals across five states in Australia. The free program, called ADAPT OIT, aims to change the way the most common food allergy among Australian school-aged children is managed.

ADAPT OIT (allergen dose optimization and immunotherapy) is a personalized treatment that involves gradually exposing children to small amounts of peanut protein. This helps build their immune tolerance to the allergen and reduce the severity of their allergy.

The program is only available to children under 12 months who have already been diagnosed with a peanut allergy. Babies who are at high risk of developing a peanut allergy may also be eligible.

Ten pediatric hospitals across five states have partnered with the National Allergy Centre of Australia to deliver the ADAPT OIT program. The program is funded by the Australian Government Department of Health.
