Personal life and early career

Rowlands was born in Madison, Wisconsin, on June 19, 1930. She studied acting at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City.

Rowlands married Cassavetes in 1954, and they had three children together.

Gena Rowlands's most famous roles

Rowlands's breakthrough role came in 1968 when she starred in Cassavetes' film Faces.

She received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress for her performance in A Woman Under the Influence (1974).

Other notable films include The Notebook (2004), The Skeleton Key (2005), and The Girl on the Train (2016).
